This week I learned the concept of "the Messy Middle" from one of the 36 podcasts I listened to since last week's studio update. I thought it would be fun to compile a list to share here so voilà!
Podcasts are the only way I get stuff done. I must have smart people talking in my ear at all times to get me through the exciting tasks (anything happening in the studio) to domestic chores (laundry, cooking, dishes, vacuuming, dusting, all of which I have been joyfully doing since I left my day job). It is an absolutely required accessory when walking my crazy-ass dog. I create a playlist with podcast-song-podcast-song on my iPod nano (precisely because it is without internet access). I work in 45 minute blocks with 15 minutes to transition/putz along to the next task. Having an end point to a task is the most important thing to me about working like this otherwise I would completely lose myself in a process. This method means I can touch many projects throughout the day like finishing the room I started to paint last week.
Which leads me back to the Messy Middle, which is defined as the period between the birth of a great idea and when that idea is ushered to the finish line. This perfectly describes my studio practice in this moment. I have birthed and started many ideas but have finished very few of them. For nine years due to life forces beyond my control, I have enjoyed the occasional burst of creative fits and starts. Now I am giving myself the time to resolve these bodies of work, which, when they are ready, will hang in this space for the Open Studio/Studio Sale I am planning for later this spring. This underused room in our house for which I am grateful, will serve as a staging area so I can install, style, and photograph pieces for sale. It is a good thing.
- Spicy Sichuan Noodles
The struggle is real for me in the kitchen but this cooking site may have changed my life.
- Top Chef New Orleans
Can someone tell me how I missed this??
- Backpacks for Dogs
Cesar says dogs need a job especially if your kid suffers from Fear Aggression like mine and that walking with a backpack will help. I'll try anything, however, I will not be buying the one Cesar has on his website for $85. Instead I just ordered this one today. Wish us luck.
