Some new work this week. One finished; one in progress.
This piece is a laser-etched collage on chipboard comprised of bits of Artforum magazine (just the articles), joss paper, and chopped-up ink and brush paintings on newsprint. The overall size is 18.25” x 17.25” however, I have cut the piece into 12 postcards, each measuring 4.25” x 6”.
This is an example of one of those postcard puzzle that I cannot stop making. I propose that I send each postcard in the mail, inviting an array of cancellation marks and carrier handling to be a silent collaborator with the piece. The piece will fit together like a puzzle, whole again. Alternative hanging methods should be considered, such as magnets or mirror clips, in lieu of a frame.
Each piece is scanned and a high-resolution print will be provided if a segment is lost in the mail.
The title consists of found words; a sentence fragment pulled out of context from an article on postcard #3.
On Tuesday I tried to hurry this piece to the finish line in time to submit it the next day to a collage show , but I couldn't do it. I enjoy a slow, repetitive process (gluing those dots one by one fits that description perfectly) and I was not up to pulling an all nighter either! I thought for sure I had it in me. I can work on it in 45 minute increments without killing my eyes and neck. But I love it!
