We are altering found books in my class. I bought this one for $5. It is called, "Try and Stop Me" - great title and just try and stop me from my obsession! (Gluing shit down.) The book contains stories and antidotes that are extremely offensive and politically incorrect.
I asked my colleague Tiffany Lin to do a quick sketch of a project she has in-progress at the moment. This is an interior perspective of the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities. I asked my students to do the same thing, to sketch their current studio project or to revisit a previous project that they were particularly fond of. It is often a luxury we do not afford ourselves; the opportunity to reconsider old work.
In class we circulated the sketches round-robin style, each one of us had 5 minutes to collage on someone's sketch. To intervene with cut and paste.
When I got this back, I must confess, I pulled some of the collaged pieces off, but even the act of doing that created compelling palimpsest.
