Sandra Kenney Rousset is one half of the singer-songwriter duo The Mrs. Roussets. You may remember the hit they had back in 2006 with their acoustic version of “Waiting For A Girl Like You” originally recorded by Foreigner in 1981.
Classically trained, Mrs. Rousset (Sandra) met her wife Maren Rousset (tomorrow’s lady) when both played in their university orchestra. Sharing a music stand, both musicians occupied chairs three and four, respectively, in the viola section. This was naturally a competitive arrangement, with whoever was in fourth chair challenging whoever was third chair. Friday challenges were fraught with tension as one musician was either winning or losing and going up or moving down in the ranks. One day Mrs. Rousset (Maren) made a bold move when instead of challenging Mrs. Rousset (Sandra) for third chair, she challenged Howard Baudelaire for second chair and won! It was that day Mrs. Rousset (Sandra) fell in love with Mrs. Rousset (Maren).
Since the university did not offer a formal folk music program, a bunch of like-minded students got together to form what was essentially a study group, attracting both young women. They enjoyed working together so much that after graduation they formed The Mrs. Roussets. Check them out this fall on tour as they support their first release in 9 years, "Covering Donna" wherein the catalog of the late Donna Summer is reimagined as acoustical numbers.
